Theodore Apel enlisted May 8, 1862 at Augusta with Capt. Russell. He served in the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and beginning February 13, 1864 in the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Apel was captured during the battle of Trevillian Station on June 11, 1864. On June 20th, he arrived at Point Lookout, Fortress Monroe and was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. on July 25th. Here he stayed until after the war ended.

Theodore Apel was released June 21, 1865 after taking the required oath of allegiance.
