Jesse Atway (J.R. Attaway) enlisted with Capt. Russell in Co. A, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry in Augusta on March 1, 1863. He was later transferred to Co. A of the 7th Georgia Cavalry when it was organized in February 1864.
Pvt. Jesse Atway served the duration of the war with the 7th and surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
