John M. Bunch enlisted as a private March 18, 1861 in 1st Regiment, Georgia Infantry ("1st Republican Blues"). Mustered out at Augusta, Ga. March 18, 1862.

He was elected 1st Lieutenant of Co. A, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry April 15, 1862. Transferred to Co. A, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry February 13, 1864.

Lt. Bunch lost his right eye at Trevillian Station, Va. and was captured June 11, 1864. Imprisoned at Point Lookout, Md. and then moved to Ft. Delaware where he remained until he was released after signing the oath of allegiance June 17, 1865.
