William J. Cooley enlisted May 8, 1862 in Augusta with Capt. Russell. 1st. Sgt. Cooley served in Co. A of the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. A, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.
Sgt. Cooley was wounded June 11, 1864 at Trevillian Station, Va. He was at Wayside Hospital at Farmville Va. through the 23rd of July.
