Melvin S. Hatch enlisted March 5, 1863 in Augusta with Capt. Russell. Pvt. Hatch served in the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. A, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Hatch had been assigned to the Signal Corps prior to the 7th Georgia Cavalry. This continued when he was detailed to the Signal Corps at Charleston by order of General Beauguard.

On July 16, 1864 he was issued a 30 day leave. On November 28, 1864 he was detailed until January 31, 1865 and was told to report to Capt. A.P. Grice , Transcript Agent.
