William Belcher enlisted in 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Company C with Capt. Miller at Savannah June 13, 1862. With the consolidation of units Co. C of the 21st became Company B of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Belcher is shown as to have been present until June 11, 1864 when he was captured at the Battle of Trevillian Station. Being in the hands of the enemy, he was sent to Fortress Monroe June 20, 1864. About a month later he was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. (July 25th).

Due to the terrible conditions at Elmira, many men died including William Belcher. He died of pneumonia November 28, 1864 and was buried at Elmira in grave # 960.
