J.W. McGee enlisted February 29, 1864 at Dorchester, S.C. with Capt. Miller.

Pvt. McGee was absent for 7 days in April. Other than that he was on roll call until early June when he was captured on the 11th of June. He was first sent to Fortress Monroe on the 20th and on July 25, '64 he was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Pvt. McGee died September 16, 1864 from remittent fever. His effects were, one jacket and one pair of pants. Pvt. J.W. McGee was buried at Elmira, Woodlawn Cemetery in grave # 297.
