Thomas H. Usher enlisted October 29, 1862 with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and served in Company B until the organization of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry through consolidation of the 21st and two other units. At that time he was assigned to Co. B of the 7th.

Just as the 7th was reaching Richmond, Va., Pvt. Usher became sick and was hospitalized in General Hospital #9 on June 7th. He was transferred to Huguenot Springs July 8th suffering with Vulnus Selopet (extration of foreign bodies in difficult locations), Chronic Dysentiria and Lumbago. Records show that Thomas Usher died July 18, 1864 at Huguenot Springs Hospital.
