James Woods (also listed Wood) enlisted in Co. C, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry in 1862 at Savannah and on February 13, 1864 was transferred to Co. B, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Woods was part of a 200 man dismounted detail who left Northern Virginia the first of December 1864. They were to acquire fresh mounts from Georgia. When they arrived they fought to defend Savannah against Sherman.

Pvt. James Woods was cut off from command and was not able to return. No further records.
