Francis M. Chatham enlisted June 7, 1862 at Athens. He served in the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Chatham was the farrier for the Company until June 11, 1864 when he was captured during the Battle of Trevillian Station. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. June 20, '64 and on July 9, 1864 was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Pvt. Francis M. Chatham died of pneumonia in prison on March 24, 1865 and was buried in grave # 2426.
