John A. Dixon enlisted June 29, 1862 in Wilkes County, Ga with Lt. Henry. Pvt. Dixon served in Co. B, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

On the March/April 1864 roll he was listed as detailed as Blacksmith in Columbia, S.C. On the May/August roll, Dixon was listed as the Squadron's Blacksmith. Again in September/October he was present as a Blacksmith.

Pvt. John A. Dixon received pay for April through July at a rate of 40 cents daily. At the time of receiving this pay, the unit was located at or near Stoney Creek Station, Va.
