Robert A. Gaines enlisted January 19, 1863 in Elbert County. He was in Co. B of the 24th Battalion and was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on February 13, 1864.
Pvt. Gaines lost his horse in action July 16, 1864, also losing saddle, bridle, halter and saber.
He surrendered and was paroled at Heartwell, Ga. May 19, 1865.
