D.C. Nelms enlisted in Elbert County, Ga. as a private in Co. B, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and on February 13, 1864 was transferred to Co. C, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

In April, the roll indicated Pvt. Nelms was on furlough and ordered to report to Columbia, S.C. May 6, 1864. He lost his horse on August 13th. On November 12th he was admitted in Jackson Hospital at Richmond with febris diarrhoea and returned to duty on November 25, 1864.

Pvt. Nelms surrendered March 1865 at Smithville, S.C.
