Richard Porterfield (Patterfield) served in the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B until February 1864 when the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was organized through consolidation of the 24th, 21st Battalion, and the Hardwick Mounted Rifles. At this time Pvt. Porterfield was assigned to Company C of the 7th.

He was captured in September 1864, either at Weldon Railroad or Reams Station. On the Oct. '64 Muster Roll, he was listed as a prisoner of war, saddle and all else was lost in action. Exchanged 11/01/1864.
