E.J. Dunegan enlisted June 12, 1862 in Hall County. He was with the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B and later Co. C until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Dunegan was captured at Louisa Courthouse, Va. on June 11, 1864. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. on June 20th and on July 25th transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Pvt. E.J. Dunegan was released June 14, 1865. When released, his description was as follows: residence, Athens, Ga.; complexion, florid; hair, dark; eyes, hazel; height, 5 ft. 71/2 inches.
