John Walker enlisted September 22, 1862 at Fort Camp with Captain Hopkins. He served in Company A and later in Co. C of the 24th Battallion, Georgia Cavalry. With the organization of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry in February 1864 by consolidation of the 24th, 21st and the HMR, Pvt. Walker was assigned to Company D of the 7th.

In early June of '64 the 7th arrived in Northern Virginia. Their first battle was Trevillian Station where Pvt. Walker was captured near Louisa Courthouse, Va.

He was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20, '64 and on July 28, 1864 to Elmira Prison, N.Y. As many of the imprisoned soldiers, John Walker became very ill in the winter of 1864-65 suffering with chronic bronchitis.

Pvt. John Walker died January 30, 1865 and was buried at Elmira in grave # 1730. Among what little effects he had was $20.00 in Confederate money.
