Mathew Collins (Matt) enlisted November 25, 1862 in Savannah with Capt. Banks. Pvt. Collins served with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

On the March/April roll, Collins was absent for a short time. In June 11, 1864 he was captured near Louisa Courthouse, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. June 20th then transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. July 25, 1864.

Pvt. Collins was hospitalized July 10, 1865 at DeCamp USA General at David's Island, New York Harbor.

He was released and paroled by oath of alegience on July 14, 1865. Pvt. Mathew Collins' description on departure follows: residence, Savannah; complexion, dark; hair, dark; eyes, grey; height, 5 ft. 10 inches.
