Joseph Helmly enlisted May 13, 1862 in Savannah with Capt. Banks. Pvt. Helmly served in Co. B, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

On June 11, 1864, Pvt. Helmly was captured at Louisa Courthouse, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. June 20th and on July 25th was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Pvt. Joseph Helmly was released June 16, 1865. Upon departure his description was recorded as follows: residence, Savannah; complexion, fair; hair, light; eyes, hazel; height, 5 ft. 6 inches.
