William H. Burroughs served with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, first in Co. B and then in Co. E as 1st Lt.

With the consolidation of units Lt. Burroughs was transferred to Co. F, 7th Georgia Cavalry and attained the rank of Captain.

In early December 1864, Col. Edward C. Anderson, Jr. who was in command of the 7th, now in Virginia, took 200 unmounted men of the 7th and left for Georgia to attain fresh mounts. Capt. William H. Burroughs at this time was assigned command of the remaining mounted men of the unit.

Capt. Burroughs remained in command of the 7th in Virginia until the end of the war, surrendering himself and the remainder of the unit on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox along with Gnl Lee.
