Charles Cavanah enlisted as a private May 13, 1862 in Company B, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry at Savannah and was inducted by Capt. Banks. He later transferred to Co. E of the 21st. When the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was formed on February 13, 1864, Charles was transferred to Company F of the 7th.

Pvt. Cavanah was listed as present until late April 1864 when he was listed as AWOL. At this time the 7th was preparing to go to Northern Virginia and Charles, like most men went to see their families before departing. The only other time he was absent he became sick in October '64 and was sent to a hospital in Raleigh, N.C.
