M.J. Hatchett enlisted June 30, 1862 in Savannah with Capt. Banks. Pvt. Hatchett served with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. B and later Co. E until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. F, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

On the 1864 March/April roll, Pvt. Hatchet was present and without horse for 15 days. He received a sick furlough July 19, 1864 for 60 days. On October 17th, he was sick without leave.
