Joel was transferred to Co. F, 7th Georgia Cavalry when it was formed Feb. 13, 1864. He went on to serve gallantly with the 7th at Trevillion Station and many other encounters.

He was listed absent on the April-August roll. This was due to having been admitted to Jackson Hospital in Richmond on April 14, 1864, diagnosed "Febris Ink" ( a burning fever). He returned to duty on October 10, 1864.
