R.W. Wilson enlisted May 13, 1862 in Savannah with Capt. Banks. Pvt. Wilson served in Co. B and later Co. E of the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. F, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

In April 1864, Pvt. Wilson was sick for a short time in a Savannah Hospital. On June 11, 1864 he was wounded during the battle at Trevillian Station, Va. He was sent to a hospital at Charlottesville, Va. His injury was vuln. sclo. left leg (a difficult wound requiring extraction of foreign bodies). He received a clothing issue on July 18th and on the 19th was furloughed for 30 days.

He was present on the September/October roll without a horse. He was captured in Savannah December 21st and was sent to Fort Delaware. Records show that he was received there March 12, 1865. He was described as: residence, Chatham County; complexion, light; hair, dark; eyes, blue; height, 6 ft 2 inches.
