Mathew Carter enlisted in Company A, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry February 12, 1864 at the Isle of Hope with Capt. Clarke. With the oganization of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry being in the making, Pvt. was assigned to Co. G, of the 7th the next day, February 13th. Mathew was present on all roll calls through October. He was listed as sick but no more.

Pvt. Mathew Carter was paroled at Thomasville, Ga. May 13, 1865. On his parole was this description:
Height, 5 ft. 9in.; Hair, Light; Eyes, Blue; Complexion, Light.
