William Fountain first enlisted in Co. D, 63rd Regiment, Georgia Volunteers. On February 23, 1863 (1864), he was granted a transfer to the 7th Georgia Cavalry and was assigned to Co. G.

Pvt. Fountain was captured during the battle of Trevillian Station in June 1864 and was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20th, then transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. on July 25, 1864.

Pvt. William Fountain died of Variola (pox) February 21, 1865 and was buried at Elmira in grave # 2257.
