Amos Banks enlisted with Capt. J.L. McAllister in the Hardwick Mounted Rifles on April 3, 1862. Later when the unit had grown to two companies, he was assigned to Co. B. When the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was organized, he was transferred to Co. H of the 7th.

Pvt. Banks fought in the battle of Trevillian Station and was captured near Louisa Court House, Va. on June 11, 1864. He was then sent to Point Lookout, Md. and on July 25th was sent to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

On February 12, 1865, Amos Banks died at Elmira Prison of chronic diarrhea and was buried in grave # 2016. His effects were listed as $30 C.S. currency.
