W.D. Bashlor enlisted with Capt. J.L. McAllister of the Hardwick Mounted Rifles December 9, 1862 in Bryan County, Ga. Pvt Bashlor served in the H.M.R. until February 13, 1864 when the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was created. At this time he was assigned to Co. H of the 7th.

He was listed as present through the May '64 roll call. Bashlor was absent, in the hands of the enemy on the June roll having been captured on June 11, 1864 during the Battle of Trevillian Station at Louisa County Courthouse, Va.

The enemy first sent Pvt Bashlor to Fortress Monroe, Va. on June 20th and transferred him to Elmira Prison, NY July 25, 1864.

He survived the horrible conditions at Elmira and was released June 14, 1865. The following description was part of his release.
