W.M. (U.M.) Bennett enlisted in the Hardwick Mounted Rifles October 13, 1863 in Bryan County with Capt. J.P. Hines signing him in. Pvt. Bennett served in the HMR until he was assigned to Company H of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry when it was created through consolidation of units.

He was present at roll calls except for missing three days in late April until he was listed as being in the hands of the enemy. He was captured on June 11, 1864 near Trevillian Station. He was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20th and transferred to Elmira Prison in N.Y.

Pvt. Bennett was transferred tor exchange on October 11, 1864 and was exchanged October 29, 1864. No further records.
