J.M. Brown enlisted April 3, 1862 in Bryan County. He served in the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Co. B. With the consolidation of the HMR and 2 other units Pvt. Brown was then in Company H, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.
Brown was captured June 11, 1864 near Trevillian Station, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe June 20th. Pvt. J.M. Brown was listed on a roll of sick prisoners and was released on oath June 5, 1865.
