James Kicklighter enlisted October 9, 1863 in Bryan County with Capt. J.P. Hines. Pvt. Kicklighter was in Co. B, Hardwick Mounted Rifles until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. H, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Kicklighter was captured June 11, 1864 near Trevillian Station, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe June 20th, and transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. July 25, '64

On February 13, 1865 he was transferred for exchange. Pvt. Kicklighter was paroled at Elmira and sent to James River, Va. for exchange. He was received at Hospital # 9 in Richmond February 25, '65. He was sent to Jackson Hospital, also in Richmond, diagnosed as having an ulcer on his right leg and was given a 60 day furlough on March 16th.
