J.M. Lee enlisted August 3, 1863 in Bryan County. He was with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Co. B until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. H, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Lee was present at roll calls until the September/October roll when he was wounded and sent to Wilson's Hospital, N.C. He was captured and paroled April 28, 1865. It 's not clear if he was a patient or a worker at the hospital at that time.
