John Monroe enlisted with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles in Bryan County, Georgia on April 3, 1862. As the unit grew in number, it was split into companies A and B, at which time Pvt.Monroe was assigned to Co. B.

In February 1864, the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was organized, consolidating the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry and 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, at this time Pvt. Monroe was transferred to Co. H of the 7th.

Pvt. John Monroe was listed as "present" on the October roll. No further records.
