D.H. Newmans enlisted October 21, 1863 in Bryan County with Capt. J.P. Hines. Pvt. Newmans was with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Co. B until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. H, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Newmans was absent for a short time in April. Otherwise present until June 11, 1864 when he was captured near Trevillian Station, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20th and transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. on July 25, 1864.

Pvt. D.H. Newmans was released from Elmira June 19, 1865. His description at that time: residence, Savannah; complexion, shallow; hair, dark; eyes, blue and height, 5 feet 9 inches.
