James M. Smith enlisted September 30, 1863 at Marietta. He served in Co. D, 24th Bttn, Ga Cav until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. I, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Smith was listed as being present until June 28, 1864 when he was sick, in General Hospital # 9 at Richmond. He was moved to Jackson Hospital July 12th, diagnosed with strictura (strictured) urethrea. He was unfit for field service and was detailed for duty at Jackson Hospital as an attendant in September. In November he was listed as a nurse.

Nurse James M. Smith was captured at Jackson Hospital at Richmond, Va. on April 3, 1865. He took the oath August 26, 1965.
