James S. Wilkins enlisted Sept. 3, 1863 in Paulding County, Georgia in Co. D, 24th Battalion, GA Cavalry.

Pvt. Wilkins transferred to Co. I, 7th Georgia Cavalry. On June 24th , 1864 he was wounded at the battle of Nance Shop. Records show him in the hospital at Richmond, Va. He was paroled at Huguenot Springs Hospital April 27, 1865.

James Wilkins returned to Paulding County, Georgia and lived out the rest of his life. He died Oct. 8, 1880 and is buried at Cross Roads Church in Dallas, Georgia.
