J.W.A. Buck enlisted November 1862 in Capt. McAllister's Hardwick Mtd. Rifles, then on February 13, 1864 was transferred to Co. K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

He and many others lost their horses. Pvt. Buck was transferred to dismounted cavalry under Maj. Farley. He was sent to get horses December 1864.

It appears as though he was assigned to Young's Brigade in defending Savannah and Charleston against Gnl. Sherman's assault and got separated while in S.C. While trying to get back to Young's brigade, he was ordered to report to Gnl. Johnston's army for duty. Pvt. J.W.A. Buck was at Augusta, Ga. when the surrender took place.
