W.J. Butler enlisted October 17, 1863 in Bryan County with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles. From there he went to Co. K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Butler didn't miss a roll call continuing throughout the duration of the war.

He surrendered with General Lee along with the few remaining of the 7th that were located at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
