George W. Clifton was born in Emanuel County, Ga., on the 3rd day of May, 1814. At the age of 22 he was elected County surveyor. In April 1839 he married Martha Newton and had four sons and three daughters. In his early manhood he was ele­cted Captain of his militia district, and was ever afterward called "Captain" Clifton.

George W. Clifton enlisted in the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Company A, on October 31, 1863 in Bryan County with Capt. J.L. McAllister.

In early February 1864 the Hardwick Mounted Rifles along with the 21st and 24th cavalry battalions were consolidated to form the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry. At this time Pvt. Clifton was assigned to Company K of the 7th.

He served the South without missing a day, no sickness nor wounds.




"Captain" George W. Clifton one of Emanuel County’s oldest and best citizens died on the 17th day of March 1892.
