Francis M. Cox, born in Liberty County, Ga., enlisted in J.L. McAllister's Hardwick Mounted Rifles in Bryan County. When the unit was split into two companies, he was assigned to Co. A., then on February 13, 1864 was transferred to Co. K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

He was detailed in early December, along with about 200 others, to return to Georgia to get fresh mounts.

About the same time they arrived, so did Gnl. Sherman resulting in this group of unmounted 7th Georgia Cavalrymen aiding in defending Savannah and later Charleston, S.C.

Pvt. Cox did not make it back to command before surrender April 9, 1865.
