J.M. Davis was enlisted in the Hardwick Mounted Rifles April 3, 1863 in Bryan County by J.L. McAllister.

Pvt. Davis served with Company A of H.M.R. until February 1864 when through consolidations of units the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry was formed. He was assigned to Company K of the 7th at this time. He was shown as present through all roll calls through October of '64.

Records were few after this date although it does show where he surrendered at Appomattox with General Lee.
