Joshua L. Smith, Jr. was enlisted into Co. A, Hardwick Mounted Rifles on May 1, 1862 by Capt. J.L. McAllister. He received $24.40 "allowance for horse". In December, 1863, he was paid an addtional $24.40 for "use & risk of horse".

After the formation of the 7th Georgia Cavalry in February 1864, he was assigned to Co. K. and was "appointed" 4th Cpl. on April 7, 1864.

Cpl. Joshua L. Smith was killed near Reams Station, 9 miles south of Petersburg, Virginia, on August 23, 1864.

Sgt. Fannin A. Morgan, also of Bryan County and Co. K, later married Cpl. Smith's widow, Sarah Elizabeth Hayman Smith, and raised Smith's daughter, Irene Ophelia Smith".
