Joseph H. Bell, Sr. served in Company A, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry prior to the organization of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry on February 13, 1864. At this time, he was assigned to Co. A of the 7th.

Private Bell was captured at Louisa Court House, Va. on June 11, 1864. He was sent to Point Lookout and was transferred to Elmira Prison, NY on July 25, 1864. On March 3, 1865 he was transferred for exchange.

Pvt. Joseph H. Bell, Sr. was furloughed for 60 days on March 18, 1865.
