J.W. Bohler was enlisted by Capt. Russell October 1, 1862 at Augusta. He served as Bugler in Co. A of the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry. When the 21st was consolidated in the process of organizing the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, Pvt. Bohler was assigned to Co. A of the 7th, continuing as Bugler.

Bohler was captured June 11, 1864 during the Battle of Trevillian Station at Louisa Court House, Va. He was sent to Point Lookout and then on July 27, 1864 was transferred to Elmira Prison, NY. Pvt. J.W. Bohler was released June 21, 1865.

Upon being released he was described as having his residence at Augusta, having fair complexion, auburn hair, blue eyes and a height of 5' 8".
