J.T. Cornell enlisted May 8, 1862 at Augusta with Capt. Russell. Cornell served with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. A, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Cornell was captured June 11, 1864 at Louisa Courthouse, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. June 20th and on July 25th he was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Cornell was chosen for exchange and was transfered, March 2, 1865. On March 7th he arrived at James River, Va. for the exchange.

On March 10th, Pvt. J.T. Cornell was admitted to Jackson Hospital at Richmond with pneumonia. He received a 60 day furlough on March 22, 1865.
