Walter Hill enlisted May 8, 1862 in Augusta with Capt. Russell. Pvt. Hill served in Co. A, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. A, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Hill was captured June 11, 1864 near Trevillian Station, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. June 20th and on July 25th was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

On December 8, 1864, Pvt. Walter Hill died of typhoid pneumonia and was buried at Elmira in grave # 1086.
