John H. Neel enlisted May 8, 1862 in Augusta with Capt Russell. Pvt. Neel was in 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. A, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

He was captured June 11, 1864 near Trevillian Station, Va. Pvt. Neel was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20th and was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y. July 25, 1864.

John H. Neal was chosen for exchange and transferred February 13, 1865. He was received February 21st by Confederate Authorities at Boulware and Cox.s Wharf, Va. He entered Jackson Hospital diagnosed with febris int. (intermidant fever).

He was transferred to Camp Lee on March 1, '65. No further records.
