Samuel J. Perry enlisted May 8, 1862 in Augusta with Capt. Russell. Pvt. Perry was with the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. A, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

He was captured June 11, 1865 near Louisa Courthouse, Va. and was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20th, then on July 25 he was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Pvt. Samuel J. Perry was transferred for exchange March 14, 1865 and was paroled at Elmira. He was sent to James River, Boulwares Wharf, Va. for the actual exchange. He was received at General Hospital on the 19th of March.
