J. Henry Prontaut enlisted with Capt. Russell in Company A of the 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry at Augusta August 1, 1863. Pvt. Prontaut served with the 21st until through consolidation of units he was assigned to Company A of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

The 7th was moved to Northern Virginia, arriving in early June of 1864. On June 5, 1864 Pvt. Prontaut was hospitalized with syphilis. While hospitalized his horse was captured. Prontaut continued his service with the 7th Georgia Cavalry when he returned to duty on June 25, 1864.
