John B. Story enlisted June 1, 1862 in Augusta with Capt. Russell. Pvt. Story was in Co. A, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. A, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Story was wounded June 11, 1864 in the right leg. The Surgeon of the Regiment recommended he receive a 60 day furlough for he was not fit to perform the duties of a soldier. After months in the hospital and having returned to his Company, and still having to use crutches, Surgeon W.A. Williamson succesfully had his furlough approved.
