David W. Akins was enlisted by Capt. Miller in Co. C, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry on June 10, 1862 in Savannah. When the 7th Georgia Cavalry was organized through consolidation of units, David was transferred to Co.B of the 7th.

In the July - August muster roll, Pvt. Akins was listed as absent, in the hands of the enemy. He was captured on June 11, 1864 during the battle of Trevillian Station at Louisa Court House. He arrived at Fortress Monroe June 20th and transferred to Elmira Prison N.Y. on July 25, 1864.

David W. Akins died September 17, 1864 and is buried at Elmira in grave # 275.
